This is where I spend my lunch break. It’s a courtyard at the back of the building I’m interning in at the moment. It’s really lovely, particularly as September has recently become a ridiculously hot month. I’ve worked around 70 or so hours this week, paid and unpaid, hence why I haven’t been more attentive. The tree in the first photo is home to a lot of little birds. My camera is terrible, so any attempt to catch a picture was hopeless. There’s a strange little worker/master thing going on with two gangs of birds, the smaller ones knock the bird feeders in order for the fatter, larger pigeons to feast. I find it hard to say I dislike pigeons, I mean, they are what they are, but I really do.
We have a lot of touring bands at (night) work, which is always interesting, as most of the time they have something interesting to talk about. Yesterday I met Mike, from a band called Night Birds, who shares my love of darker graphic novels, such as Black Hole and Leah Haye’s Funeral of the Heart (and everything else she’s ever done). He recommended me a lot of new things to look at, including that infamous Binky Brown by Justin Green, that Mike told me pretty much revolutionized the evolution of the comic book, where you could talk about things other than superheroes. There’s an essay collection too (that he was reading at the bar, I don’t know how because it is LOUD), ‘Outlaws, Rebels, Freethinkers, and Pirates’ by Bob Levin. I am determined to explore other things in my year out, and this might be one of the many things I choose to pursue.
Mike writes two really interesting blogs too - I KISS THE SCREEN that talks about Horror and Sci-fi films, including Evil Dead, John Carpenter and all sort of interesting articles. The other is FREEDOM SCHOOL RECORDS that documents an obsession with Zines, Underground Graphic and Comic Book art, and things you won’t find in any regular comic book shop.
